The City of St. Louis is in its present location as a result of the founder of the City, Pierre Laclede Liguest, who chose the site to establish his fur trading post so that it would not be subject to flooding while at the same time have a central location.
The City of St. Louis lies at the intersection of the rivers Missouri and Mississippi. St. Louis became incorporated as a town in 1809 and to-date the city has a population of about 318,000 inhabitants. It may be noted that about 2.9 million people live in the Greater St. Louis area.
